Aberdeen Village made the news a couple of times this fall, with stories that didn’t necessarily pertain to senior living as an industry.

The community was happy to help when a reporter from Kansas City’s KSHB 41 was looking for voters in this year’s election, to discuss upcoming issues and concerns about mail-in ballots. Many Aberdeen Village residents rely on mail-in ballots because of the convenience. They want to make sure their vote counts.

“I’ll fill out the papers and send them in so my voice gets counted,” resident Heide Poole told reporter Charlie Keegan. “Maybe I’ll be the one voice that matters.”

Just a few days later, the TV station send another crew for a separate story. This time, they featured Aberdeen Village’s monarch butterfly garden.

The garden was started by resident Lawrence Stoakes several years ago. Lawrence passed away and today, his daughter continues to maintain the garden.

“I can still see his apartment from here,” said Diana Stoakes while tending to the garden. “He lived on the third floor there, and that is a bonus of it; it kind of keeps his memory going.”

The garden helps monarch butterflies during their annual migration from Canada to Mexico for the winter. It has milkweed which the monarchs use to lay their eggs. September and October are usually peak migration months and Aberdeen Village residents say they’re in the habit of stopping by to see the butterflies.

Aberdeen Village is thrilled to be able to work with local Kansas City media –whether that’s to help local reporters produce their stories or to showcase life in the community. Thank you KSHB 41 for your coverage.
